Lucerne, pearl of central Switzerland, is a small town of 80`000 inhabitants built on the banks of Lake Lucerne. The city is famous for its famous "Kapellbrücke" or Pont de la Chapelle, a medieval wooden covered bridge built in 1365, which crosses the Reuss for more than 200 meters by marking several elbows. It’s the oldest bridge of its kind in Europe. Several triangular panels painted in oil and dating from the seventeenth century are visible in the frame of the roof of the bridge.

In 1993, two-thirds of the building went up in smoke, destroyed by a night fire. The origins of the fire remain unclear. The next morning, the inhabitants wake up traumatized: impossible to imagine the city without its symbol! The bridge is finally rebuilt eight months later. Old buildings are not the only attractions in Lucerne. A couple steps from the train station, the Palace of Culture and Congress, built by architect Jean Nouvel, catches the eye with its spectacular cantilevered roof over the lake.

For a breathtaking view of the city and the winding shores of Lake Lucerne that creep between the mountains, the ascent of Mount Pilatus, at more than 2000 m above sea level, is a must. The steepest train line in the world climbs almost to the top! To climb slopes that go up to 48%, a new rack system specially designed for this train even had to be invented.
